“What Are These Wounds In Thine Hands?”

Zechariah 13:6

The wounds of Christ occupy much of the writings of God’s prophets in the Old Testament.  Sometimes in figures of speech; such as: The slaying of the Passover lamb in Exodus 12:3-14; The Lord, through Paul in I Cor. 5:7 tells us “For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.”  The Brazen serpent lifted up on the pole, in Num. 21:8-9 is verified by Jesus in his talk with Nicodemus in John 31-18, as being typical of His wounds and death for our sins.  Isaiah 53 is filled with the descriptions of His wounds for us.  Let us be sure they were wounds, then; they are wounds now.  For they have not healed, as is shown by the text in Zech. 13:6.  The writer carries a scar on the first finger of the left hand from a sharp knife we were playing with in childhood, once it was gaping wound, now it is a scar.  Our Lord’s wounds are not scars; they are still open wounds that remind us what He suffered to save us.  It is unscriptural to sing: “The Nail Scarred Hand.”  For they are: nailed Wounded Hands.  Let us now look at God’s answer to:  “What Are These Wounds In Thine Hands?”  Where He received them, “Was in the house of my friends.”  What these wounds represent is what we want to study.

I

THEY ARE PURPOSED WOUNDS

"Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it" (Acts 2:23-24).  These scriptures let us see that the death of Christ was planned of God.  For we are told: "How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures" (I Cor. 15:3-4).  His wounds and death was patterned and purposed of God as is shown by these scriptures.  Again we are told: "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:6).  Friend, do you now see they were, and are: God purposed wounds for you?

THEY ARE WOUNDS OF WILLINGNESS

God the Father was willing   to give His Son: "For God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16); "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins" (I John 4:10).  These scriptures show the willingness of God the Father, to GIVE His Son.

Jesus Christ The Son Gave Himself: (1) "Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father" (Gal. 1:4).  (2) "Who gave himself for me" (Gal. 2:20).   Christ was willing to die for the world; But He was also willing to die for "ME," and You.  If there had been only one person in all the history of time, Jesus would not have suffered any less then he did.  If you want to know the cost of sin; look at Christ death for us upon the cross, Jesus said: "I lay down my life for the sheep" (John 10:15).  "Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.  No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again" (John 10:17-18).  What match less love, what Divine willingness! To die for us!

III

THEY ARE WOUNDS OF LOVE FOR SINNERS

"But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Rom. 5:8); "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son," (John 3:16). "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners," (1 Tim. 1:15).  Does God love sinners?  The death of Christ upon the cross is God's Eternal YES! Christ's resurrection from the dead is the pledge of both the Father, and the Son, that the penalty of sin, for every believer in Christ is forever put away.  They become wounds of joy, wounds of trust, for every child of God.  "Hallelujah what a Saviour!"  "He was wounded for our transgressions," (Isa. 53:5).

IV

THEY WERE AND ARE

WOUNDS OF SATISFACTION

  1. They Were Satisfying To God The Father: “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our’s only, but also for the sins of the whole world” (I John 2:2).  Propitiation means "Mercy Seat" or satisfaction.  Once every year under the Law of Offerings, God was "Mercy-seated” or satisfied by the blood of the offered lamb: Leviticus 16:15, 30-34.  The fact that there are no more Sin-offerings is proof that God is satisfied with what Christ has done. Read Heb. 10:12-18.

  1. They Are Satisfying Wounds To Christ: "He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied:" (Isa. 53:11).  Travail, is a medical term, to describe suffering, the mother travails (suffers) to bring a child into the world.  Christ suffered to save us, and he is satisfied.  "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Heb. 12:2).  Set down, proves his work is now a finished transaction, never to be repeated.

  1. They Are Satisfying Wounds To The Believer: The woman at the well was overjoyed with learning He was the Christ: John 4:24-29.  One who has believed that "Christ hath once suffered for sins: the just for the unjust, that he might, bring us to God" (I Pet 3:18), and that he is "alive forevermore" Rev. 1:18.  These will not become dissatisfied with Christ, and   try to save themselves, Christ's wounds were satisfying to doubting Thomas, in John 20:24-29; "My Lord and my God."  Christ is our satisfaction for salvation from the guilt and penalty of sin, for every believer.  We will be satisfied with the new body He will give us at His return. "As for me, I will behold they face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness" (Psalms 17:15).  Christ's wounds are: Purposed, Willing, Loving, Forgiving, and Satisfying Wounds.  "Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him" (Psalms 2:12).  "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:” (John 3:36).  Thank the Lord, for the satisfaction of HIS WOUNDS.
