THE EVERLASTING ARMS
“Underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deut. 33:27)
Dear believer have you ever taken time to consider were your real security in life lies? Think what temporal things that you have that you could not lose in just a short time. The Scriptures say that God-the eternal God-is Himself our support at all times, and especially our support in times of trouble, trials, and adversities.
There are times when under a deep sense of our own great sinfulness and foolishness, that a believer is so humbled before God that he does not even know how to pray to God. His sin is so great that in his own eyes he appears worthless. And yet when we as believers are at what seems our worst and lowest point “underneath are the everlasting arms” of grace. Sin may pull us low, but Christ’s great atonement where He died the “just for the unjust” is still sufficient. Moreover, we have been sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption, and even now the Christ sits at the right hand of the Father where He ever lives to make intercession for us that our faith fails not. He has promised “Lo, I am with you even to the end of the ages” and “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” The Scriptures declare we are “kept by the power of God”. Truly, “underneath are the everlasting arms”.
Again, there are times when the Christian sinks under the burden of heavy trials and sorrow. Financial problems may be bearing down on you. Your health may be slipping away or gravely in doubt. Personal and family problems may seem to be overwhelming to you with little chance of a solution. Sorrow has arrived perhaps for an extended stay. Every earthly security may seemingly have been taken away. The seeds of doubt and fear may be already taking root. Depression and despondency may be knocking at the door. What can we say then? We can rejoice that underneath us still “are the everlasting arms”. We cannot fall so far in adversity that God’s precious promises do not encircle us; His power does not sustain us and provide for us; His loving care does not meet our deepest needs; and His wisdom does not make a way for us in the wilderness. Satan may assault us and seek to harm us. The storms of adversity may fiercely blow and howl, but these efforts will all come to nothing, because “underneath are the everlasting arms”. God has promised not to put on us more than we can bear, and He will provide for us strength for each day; grace for each need; and power for each duty. The Scriptures declare “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things” (Rom. 8:31). If God was willing to send His own dear Son to die for our sins and meet our deepest spiritual needs, will He not also meet our temporal needs? His Spirit residing within us, His Son interceding for us in heaven, His presence always with us, His wisdom and power providentially working all things (good and bad) for good for us, His promises ensuring us that one day we will be conformed to the image of His Son and be with Him forever, and even right now underneath us are the everlasting arms! Take heart tried and tested one! We shall yet praise Him!
