A FOUNTAIN OPENED
Zech. 13:1
Fountains are often used in scripture to picture the vitality of the Christian life. In John 7:37, a fountain is used to speak of the refreshing life that is ours as a believer in Jesus Christ. In Isaiah 58:11 a fountain speaks of guidance and satisfaction, and in Psalm 87:7, a constant supply of grace. But one of greatest uses of the word applies to the fountain of redemption.
How we should rejoice that there has been a fountain opened to cleanse us from all sin. It is a fountain which is open to all sinners no matter how vile, and we can come at any time. Grace opened this fountain and grace will keep it open. This fountain is none other than the precious blood of Jesus which was shed for sinners to wash away their sins. Its efficacy is infinite and eternal. It cleanses the vilest of sinners and is available to all who come by faith now. It not only suits the sinner, but the saint as well. The Scriptures plainly declare “the blood of Jesus Christ cleanesth us from all sin”. What would we do without this fountain? To all who need pardon and peace with God and old gospel hymn tells us:
There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel’s veins:
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains
Dear dying lamb Thy precious blood
Shall never loose its power
Till all the ransomed church of God
Be saved to sin no more.
We can have a full hope in Christ. This precious fountain for healing and cleansing springing from his shed blood for us opens heaven’s doors to us, brings us into our inheritance, and bestows upon us the riches of his grace. It washes us as white as snow, brings a full forgiveness to us and fits us for his kingdom and to share his eternal glory.
The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day
And there may I though vile as he, wash all my sins away!
